National Pet Hydration Awareness Month: Keeping Our Furry Friends Hydrated and Healthy

Last Updated 9/24/2025

As the summer heat intensifies, it's crucial to remember that our pets need proper hydration just as much as we do. July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month, a perfect time to highlight the importance of keeping our furry companions well-hydrated and healthy.

The Statesville Recreation & Parks Department is here to provide you with essential tips and information to ensure your pets stay safe and hydrated during these warmer months.

Why Hydration is Essential for Pets

Just like humans, pets rely on water to regulate their body temperature, aid digestion, and maintain overall health. Dehydration in pets can lead to serious health issues, including kidney failure, heatstroke, and even death. Pets are particularly vulnerable to dehydration during the hot summer months, making it vital for pet owners to be vigilant about their water intake.

Tips to Keep Your Pets Hydrated

Provide Fresh Water: Ensure that your pets always have access to clean, fresh water. Refill their water bowls frequently and consider adding an ice cube to keep it cool.

Portable Water Bowls: When you’re out and about, bring a portable water bowl and a bottle of water for your pet. There are many convenient, collapsible bowls available that make it easy to hydrate your pet on the go.

Hydrating Foods: Incorporate wet food into your pet's diet, as it contains higher moisture content than dry kibble. You can also offer hydrating fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers, and carrots, but always check with your vet first.

Shade and Cool Areas: Ensure your pets have access to shaded and cool areas, especially during peak heat hours. Never leave them in a parked car, as temperatures can rise rapidly.

Monitor Activity Levels: Avoid excessive exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when it's cooler.

Statesville Dog Park: A Haven for Hydrated Play

One of the best places to keep your pet active and hydrated is the Statesville Dog Park (at Caldwell Park). This dedicated space for our canine friends offers a safe and enjoyable environment for dogs to play and socialize. Here’s what makes the Statesville Dog Park an excellent spot for your pet:

  • Water Stations: The park is equipped with a water station to ensure your dog stays hydrated while playing. This station is conveniently located and easily accessible.
  • Shaded Areas: Shaded spots are available where dogs can rest and cool down, protecting them from the sun’s intense heat.
  • Agility Equipment: For those energetic pups, the park features agility equipment that offers both physical exercise and mental stimulation.
  • Separate Areas: The park has designated areas for small and large dogs, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for all sizes.
  • Friendly Community: The Statesville Dog Park is a great place to meet other pet owners and create a supportive community that cares about pet health and hydration.
