Celebrating Courage, Joy, and Community: Special Olympics Spring Games 2026

Last week, Special Olympics Iredell County proudly hosted our Spring Games at Statesville High School - and what an incredible celebration it was.

Day one welcomed 170 young athletes, including elementary and middle school competitors (ages 2–7 and up), while day two featured 186 high school and independent athletes. Across both days, participants gave it their all in a variety of track and field events, demonstrating determination, joy, and true sportsmanship in every moment.

From the starting line to the finish, the energy was contagious. Cheers echoed across the field, smiles filled the stands, and every athlete showed exactly what these games are all about - effort, courage, and heart.

This event would not have been possible without the support of our incredible community. Nearly 125 volunteers each day generously gave their time and energy to ensure every athlete had the opportunity to compete, be celebrated, and shine - and shine they did.

Moments to Remember

The Spring Games were filled with meaningful and memorable moments, including:

• David Bridgeman and Sophie Funderburk leading the Athlete Oath, setting the tone for competition rooted in fairness and courage
• The Statesville High School Inclusive Chorus delivering a beautiful and inspiring National Anthem
• Conner Troutman of North Iredell High School proudly participating in the Torch Run alongside the Statesville Police Department
• The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office leading the Torch Run on day one, culminating in the lighting of the Flame of Hope - a powerful symbol of courage, determination, and unity

Each of these moments served as a reminder that the Spring Games are about far more than competition - they are about connection, inclusion, and celebrating every individual’s abilities.

More Than a Competition

The Special Olympics Spring Games provide athletes with the opportunity to show the world what they are capable of. They create a space where differences are embraced, achievements are celebrated, and a strong, supportive community comes together.
